Driver Training Orientation/Induction Information

Introduction

Welcome to Yellow Cabs’ nationally accredited New Driver Training Program. This document provides an overview of driver training and Yellow Cab policies that are relevant to driver training. Please read the following information before booking a course.

2.

Procedures for Training

2.1 Enrolment

Enrolment may be completed during business hours Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) at the Fleet Operations counter. Various application forms need to be filled out and a Location and Pre-requisite English assessments will need to be already completed at the Orientation classes on Tuesday morning or evening.

Requirements for enrolment : New Drivers Course

    • Open Queensland Driver’s Licence
    • Proof of Identification (Birth Certificate/Extract, Current Passport showing current Visa provisions).
    • Total $470.00 – Eftpos and Credit Card facilities are available cost includes :

                 
  • $400.00 Training Course
  • $26.00 inc GST non-refundable charge for English Assessment and
  • $44.00 inc GST for First Aid Information Session

NOTE: If the applicant has completed a First Aid course in the past five (5) years, and a certificate can be produced, $44.00 will be deducted from the cost of the course.

NOTE: When you obtain your licence, you must also get a Traffic History from Queensland Transport and present it to Fleet Operations.

NOTE: This course will run for two weeks. There are night courses also that run for eight nights. Further information will be provided when call 3391 5955 ext.223 

Requirements for returning drivers, drivers from other companies or interstate drivers*

  • Hire Driver's Licence (Driver's Authority)
  • A Letter of Clearance from their previous Taxi Company
  • Proof of Identification (Birth Certificate/Extract, Current Passport showing current Visa provisions)
  • $154.00 - EFTPOS and Credit Card facilities are available, cost includes
    • $110.00 Training Course
    • $44.00 INC GST for First-Aid Information Session

* Conditions Apply- you must meet certain criteria in order to qualify for this course.  

NOTE : If the applicant has completed a First-Aid course within the last five years and a   certificate can be produced, $44.00 will be deducted from the cost of the course.

NOTE : There will be NO intake for the Refresher Course on the Wednesday morning before the session. Final intake for this course is 1600Hrs (4.00pm) on the Tuesday afternoon before.

NOTE : This course runs every Wednesday and Thursday excepting public holidays.


Drivers from another taxi company will be required to undergo a Preliminary Map Reading Assessment. Drivers must also attend Advanced Training which can be completed within three months of obtaining a PIN. Drivers must have done no less than ten shifts. This unit is held every Monday at 17:30 hours in the new training room. Failure to complete this unit will result in the authority to drive a Yellow cab being withdrawn.

You will also be required to apply for a "Driver Record Information Request" from Queensland Transport to allow Yellow Cabs Qld to check your traffic history. The Fleet Operations Manager and Training Manager will view results.

Drivers from Interstate will also be required to present:

  • A traffic history from their state transport authority
  • A qualification that also lists the modules and competencies of training for the state of origin2.2  English Assessment/Driver Record  Information Request

2.2 English Assessment 

An applicant must  pass an English assessment (at a fee of $26.00 INC GST) before starting the driver-training course. Applicants who are found to be not competent in English will be routed to an appropriate TAFE course. You will also be required to apply for a 'Driver Record Information Request' from Queensland Transport to allow Yellow Cabs Qld to check your traffic history. The Fleet Operations Manager and Training Manager will view the results.

NOTE : Driver Authority applications can be completed after successfully completing pre-requisite English Assessments. These assessments are conducted at various training locations. The main base at Woolloongabba conducts Orientation sessions every Tuesday, 9.00am and 5.00pm. Sessions may go for some time due to numbers of entrants and availability of other personnel to assist, so allow time in your planning.

NOTE : Any person who has not lived in Brisbane for more than 6 months or who is identified as a person who may require more local knowledge is required to undergo a pre-training location assessment.

2.3 Payment of Fees

A fee of $470.00 is payable after an applicant has passed the English assessment and before the start of training.

2.4  Course Timetable

Details of the training units are listed In Appendix A at the end of this document. Course timetables and assessment procedures will be available at the start of the course. Any cancellation after this stage will be subject to Yellow Cabs refund policy.

2.5  Course Completion

On completion of the course, the Manager can arrange placement and shifts. If the trainee was sent to the course by an owner/operator, the trainee must return to that owner/operator for shifts. It must be understood that although the course runs for a set time, passing that course may take in excess of the time allotted. A candidate who fails to achieve competency in a particular area may be required to re-sit both the training and the assessment until competency is achieved. Candidates for training should allow for this in their time allotment plans before enrolment.

2.6  Advanced Training

Advanced training must be completed within three months of obtaining a PIN. Drivers must have done no less than ten shifts. This unit is held Every Monday at 17:30 hours in the training room. Failure to complete this unit will result in the authority to drive a Yellow cab being withdrawn.

3.

Concerns and Complaints

Trainees who feel that they have a genuine complaint have the right to a fair hearing at which they may state their concerns.
 

3.1 Appeal against an assessment

Trainees who do not agree with the result of an assessment must lodge the appeal on the relevant document (complaint form) within four weeks of the assessment. Complaint forms are available from the assessor or from Fleet Operations.

Procedure

The assessment will be reviewed by the assessor/trainer with the trainee, clarifying why decisions were made and the trainee's reason for grievance.

If a satisfactory resolution cannot be reached, fill out the Complaint form with the assistance of the assessor/trainer.
The appeal will be assessed by the Training Manager and, if necessary, the Fleet Operations Manager. A written statement on the result of the appeal will be issued to the trainee.

 

 

4.

Disciplinary Procedures.

Trainees must be on time for each training unit. If a trainee cannot attend or will be late for a training unit, please inform the trainer so other arrangements can be made for completion of the unit.

Trainees who are found to be cheating may be expelled from training or given new assessments. The Training Manager and the Fleet Operations Manager will make decisions on these matters.

5.

Access and Equity Policy

Yellow Cabs will meet the needs of individuals and the community as a whole through the integration of access and equity guidelines. Yellow Cabs will ensure that equity principles for all people are implemented through the fair allocation of resources and the right to equality of opportunity without discrimination.

Trainees will not be discriminated against for any reason and fair access will be given to all applicants.

Access and equity issues have been considered during curriculum development.

Staff have access to development opportunities that assist trainers who deliver courses to under-represented groups.

6.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Mutual Recognition of other RTO’s.

Trainees who have AQF qualifications or a Statement of Attainment from another RTO or have knowledge and skills to do all the tasks in a certain unit, are not required to complete that unit.

Procedure

Obtain an RPL assessment form from a Training Officer and state which units are to be considered for RPL. Documentary evidence (certificates, statements of attainment, letters of validation) should be attached to the application.

An RPL assessor(s) will interview the applicant and the result of the application will be categorised as

    • Granted – a Statement of Attainment will be issued.
    • Not Granted – further training is required.
    • Further Assessment Needed – not enough information could be gained from the interview. The applicant will be tested in the areas where proficiency is claimed.

The applicant will be informed of the result of the application and the reasoning for it. The applicant can appeal the decision

 

7.

Parking

Parking is not allowed in the Buranda base campus. "No Limit" parking is available in Deshon Street and surrounding streets. Alternatively, buses pass close by on Logan Road and it is a short walk from Buranda Railway Station. Parking in the Yellow Cabs Compound is restricted to visitors and not available for Trainees.

Refund Policy

Money will only be refunded prior to commencement of training, to the full cost of the course, with an Administration fee of $30.00. The $44.00 fee for the First-Aid Session is refundable only where applicable.  Prices are subject to change without notice.

  • All the bold, CAPITAL LETTERS refer to Suburbs. E.g., INALA, EAGLEBY, DEAGON
  • Lettering that is mixed and bold refers to Localities or unofficial suburbs. E.g., Rosalie, Buranda, Toombul

Facilities Index (pages 24 to 42)

Specific location information according to the endeavour or interest of the facility provided. E.G. a tourist destination would be located in “Places of Interest”. Bays, Beaches, etc. refers to anything on, in, near or about water. The rest follow their titles with addresses, locations and map numbers and references

Note: Governmemt Legislation states that a driver must have a good general knowledge of Brisbane before commencement of driving a taxi. If you are unsure of specific locations such as Shopping Centres, Hospitals, Airports etc then it would be advisable to familiarise yourself with these locations before starting the course.

Street Index (page 47)

Check abbreviations so that no confusion can occur. Especially with Ct, Cct, Cl and Cr.

If you cannot find the street name in the general street index then access the SUPPLEMENTARY STREET INDEX on page 129 of the UBD. It shows approximate locations of newly developed or proposed streets that do not appear on the maps.

Note that P.129 includes listings for the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast

This index lists as many of the CBD buildings as are currently known.

Maps

  • Maps 1- 4 showcase the Brisbane CBD
